Roi Turbo, aka the project of brothers Benjamin & Conor McCarthy, release their new EP, Bazooka, today via Maison Arts, and present a video for EP highlight “Hot Like Fire.” They also announce June headline shows in New York City and Los Angeles, following their North American tour supporting Empire of the Sun. Of the EP, the brothers state: “Bazooka is us in a nutshell – two brothers mixing all our eclectic tastes into one project. We’ve woven together our past and present here, blending analog textures with digital experimentation to create a sound that’s uniquely Turbo.”
Today’s single, “Hot Like Fire,” displays Roi Turbo’s knack for showcasing a wide world within a tight lens. Originally written in 2022, it’s a dance pop gem, if your idea of pop was recorded by the Sugar Hill Records house band in a mid-’90s Parisian electronic music studio. It’s also the first Turbo track on the EP to feature vocals. Of the song, Roi Turbo say: “‘Hot Like Fire’ is an explosive track we wrote to ignite the dance floor. With the mix of analog synths and punchy bass, the groove is locked in to get you moving. We wanted this track to feel like a celebration of our influences – blending a bit of that ’80s Afro-disco fire with modern house energy, just pure vibe and fun!”

At its core, Bazooka reflects the lifelong bond between the South African-bred, London-based brothers—their shared influences, differing perspectives, and unified vision. It celebrates the permanence of rhythmic pasts, the contrasts of analog and digital futures, and a familial bond which marries their shared idea of sonic ecstasy to a populist streak of giving listeners what they want. “Each track shows a different side of what we love: you’ll hear afro-disco/funk grooves, futuristic house, and everything in between, all tied together with that big, feel-good energy,” say the brothers. “We made sure the whole EP was free of any pretentiousness – just quality music that gets you moving from start to finish. We had an absolute blast making Bazooka, and we hope you can feel that love and energy that went into it when you listen to the EP.”
Picking up where other great beat-driven siblings like Soulwax’s David and Stephen Dewaele, left off, the McCarthys rock the block, and blend the distinctions. In the process, Roi Turbo creates a classic disco-funk-house sound that skips between soundsystem eras of multiple continents, winding up with a contemporary edge all its own.
