REVIEW: The Accountant 2

Ok, first of all, I love how one of the biggest complaints many people had about the first The Accountant was its depiction of savant as this superpower of sorts… And the movie’s response to this sequel was like, “Screw them!” and proceeded to create a league of extraordinary (tech) children, LMAO.

And I guess that’s a perfect indication of what type of movie this is. They just went for it. And you know what? Respect.

As for the The Accountant 2 as a whole, it could have been better. They tried to insert a dose of humor, much of which honestly failed to get any laughs out of me; at best, it elicited a smile or two. The banter and whole chemistry between Bernthal and Affleck were great and are what make this whole movie work. You truly believe in the camaraderie and the buddy cop routine between the straight man and the “goofy” one. And for the most part it works. There’s also more action compared to the first film, which I felt was missing. This time, we have a cooler ending instead of the anticlimactic one from before. However, the bad guys remain pretty forgettable. They came up as much of a threat, granted, but still, that’s something they should work on more if they choose to follow this up. Also, I’m not sure if I was just tired but the second act sent me on an unintentional nap.

All in all, I’m a little disappointed this is kind of what we got after an almost decade-long wait (yes, there have been some people who have been looking for a sequel for a while); story-wise, it doesn’t bring anything new and much of the novelty is gone. But some of the action, Pineda’s cool character—which we should have gotten more of—and Ben/Jon’s whole chemistry make it a fun and entertaining watch. Furthermore, Dessner’s score was low-key great.

Not one I would rush to see in theaters, but if you are a fan of the first one and you enjoy your dad crime movies, this one is worth checking out.
