REVIEW: Daredevil: Born Again – everything falls in the right place

It has been a long road for Daredevil, with Disney initially (apparently that was never Feige’s plan) planning to make the new season of “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen” a more lighthearted and longer series. However, with the change of power, things took a turn for the better, cutting the number of episodes in half, going from a series that was at most PG-13 to the violent and brutal content that the series had accustomed us to. Also, the return of the main cast (though few were able to make it past one episode). All the pieces were falling in the right place, and it seems the series knew it in the end with that Radiohead needle drop.

Nine episodes later, what are my thoughts on Daredevil: Born Again?

Daredevil

Well, it’s far from being as great as any of the first three seasons on Netflix, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t good. Let’s see, Charlie and Vincent as Matt and Wilson were fantastic. I really liked the parallel between the two, as both are individuals driven by violent impulses, divided by a thin line. Both apparently wanted to leave their dark past and side behind, but it refused to let them go, and in the end, each one just chose to embrace it and become what they ultimately are. It’s like Batman wanting to be Bruce, but as they say, Bruce is the facade and Batman is the real person. Likewise, the series kept reminding us that Matt is the facade of Daredevil. Similarly, we see how Wilson and Kingpin couldn’t be split into two different individuals; ultimately, Wilson Fisk is a disguise that Kingpin uses to hide and maintain appearances. As if that weren’t enough, this season we see the addition of Vanessa as another bloodthirsty rival that Daredevil will have to face because that’s exactly what Matt needed, another pain in the ass.

Technically speaking, everything was fine. Obviously, I would have loved a bit more hand-to-hand action, but what we got was pretty good, especially that final episode. That scene with Daredevil and Punisher taking everyone out left and right was fantastic, particularly the final showdown between Frank and the police squad. That being said, I wasn’t a big fan of the fight scenes where CGI was used. I really don’t see the reason why it had to be done, and it threw me off.

Daredevil

Other things that I wasn’t a big fan of were the criminal misuse of Muse. He was a promising villain, and I think he was wasted. I understand that the whole series revolved around the duality between Matt and Wilson, but in that case, they shouldn’t have used Muse or done something else. The revelation of who he was also left me quite cold. I really expected more. And all that stuff with the BB report never led anywhere; what was the point?

All in all, far from perfect, but satisfying. In the end, it left me wanting to see more, and all the pieces are there for something great; it’s almost as if this entire season was a prelude to the really good stuff. If so, 2026 can’t come soon enough.
