Back in early January 2023—a dumping month where studios just drop a lot of the crap they have on their desk, many of them, curiously(?), being horror films—the world was introduced to M3GAN, an apparently harmless and helpful AI doll meant to serve as a support for eight-year-old Cady (Violet McGraw) by her workaholic aunt (Allison Williams), who has been given full custody after her niece’s tragic death in a car accident.
All good, right?
Except this is a James Wan/Blumhouse production, and it’s AI in today’s era in which even its use for something as a transition card or altering an actor’s voice accent is enough to start an uproar. So our cute M3GAN quickly turns into this overprotective, bloodthirsty doll who will not stop at anything and will not spare in taking any life that threatens her… human child? BFF?
Akela Cooper’s campy, fun script paired with a great marketing and dance, the film shone through the garbage and become a low-key cult classic. So a sequel was imminent and, unsurprisingly, its teaser was released during the biggest night for music. And it didn’t give away that much—if anything—but the little we got was enough to have me intrigued.
What is M3GAN 2.0 about?
The visionary creators of the original film return to unleash a thrilling new chapter of A.I. chaos with M3GAN 2.0.
Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I bitch is about to meet her match.
So if I read this correctly, we’re in for M3GAN’s T2? Now that sounds like a fun and wildly entertaining idea! Though part of me believes—and to some extent is worried—they may have M3GAN end up reverting back to her old self… or maybe she will go in a melting lake?
Also apparently we’re getting a spinoff… an erotic spinoff?
Sure, bring it on!
