ETHANUNO IS KICKING THE NIGHT OFF WITH “PHASE 1”

Wasting no time after dropping his genre-smashing debut EP, necesidad, San Diego singer, songwriter, and producer EthanUno returns with his new single, “phase 1,” out now via Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope. The flirty party-starter of a track continues the DIY-minded artist’s winning run of glitchy, sugar-sweet music that inventively swirls up romantic bilingual lyrics with strains of hyperpop, R&B, Latin croon, and lo-fi dance.

Underpinned by a West Coast hip-hop groove “phase 1” gives us EthanUno at his most confident: “No quiero dormir, I wanna stay up / Been a while since you had a night off, take one / And if the party ain’t a vibe we gone make one / It’s ’bout be a long night, we in phase one.” Things heat up lyrically and sonically as the verses take us into phases two and three.

The minimal music video finds EthanUno on a rooftop at sunset, flexing his dance moves while sporting a Padres snapback, oversized shades, and a heart-shaped pendant — warm up for the night ahead. “phase 1” was written, produced, performed, recorded, and mastered by EthanUno at his home studio, like necesidad before it. The January EP included highlights like the pleading and pulsating “DQTC,” and the lovelorn but bubbly “las mañanas” — prime examples of the happy-sad vibe he’s minted over the past few months.

EthanUno’s output to date showcases a wild array of influences and energies. Ahead of necesidad’s songs, he shared sweltering pop&B single “quemar” — co-written and co-produced Happy Perez (benny blanco, Halsey, Miguel) — as well as the steamy “pecador,” a trop-house-infused pitch to a would-be lover. Before that came “tattoo,” an equally upbeat and heartbroken cut that wound up making both Entertainment Tonight’s New Music Friday lineup and Ones To Watch’s #NowWatching playlist. The latter also featured his neon-streaked September single, “on 10.” His one-of-one meld of Latin pop and SoundCloud experimentation is spreading.

Older self-released EthanUno songs like “tu” and “pensando en ti” continue to pick up fans, too — some of them famous. “pensando en ti” got an early cosign from Frank Ocean, who played it on Homer Radio, and was more recently embraced by Rosalía, who included the cut on her Interview Magazine “Birthday Bangers” playlist. Meanwhile, EthanUno is growing an army of devoted followers across socials who eagerly devour each confection he drops.
